The town of Mount Pleasant is a charming village surrounded by expansive and sprawling planned developments. Despite the growth, the heart of the village remains unique. This burgeoning city is also home to very distinctive and highly beloved retail establishments — both in the village and in newer shopping areas. Founded by Julia and John Royall, and in business for more than 40 years, this icon of hometown hardware stores has been selling hardware, tools and accessories, electrical wiring materials, gardening supplies, plants, hanging baskets, shrubs, cleaning supplies for industrial site cleaning, coolers, camping supplies, and even fishing boots! When it comes hurricane season you can depend on them for hurricane preparedness supplies too. The store is part of the Ace Hardware network, so you can be sure you’ll find a full array of typical hardware. 

According to The Post and Courier, “John bought Willard Hardware… in September 1976 and expanded … into its current location in 1990.” This store is a stalwart and one might argue, the building block of much of Mt. Pleasant today.

Abide A While Garden Boutique, 1460 Hwy 17 North, Mt. Pleasant, SC 29464

If Royall Hardware is the nuts and bolts of Mount Pleasant, Abide A While is the source of all green beauty for the community.


This long-time favorite founded in 1957 has sold annuals, perennials and garden themed accessories for interior and exterior since the time when the town was a small village.


This beloved shop is always crowded in the spring when everyone wants to get out in the garden to enhance their home.

Gwynn’s of Mt. Pleasant, 916 Houston Northcutt Blvd, Mount Pleasant SC, 29464

People who want to look their best buy luxurious clothing, jewelry, cosmetics, gifts and home accessories from Gwynns . The store selects the latest looks from international and well known designers of stylish clothing and accessories. Known for their outstanding customer service, the store even touts that they will open after hours if you have a “fashion emergency”. Patrons work with private shoppers and receive personalized attention.

This family owned store established by Marshall Simon opened in 1987. Mr. Simon’s children, including his daughter Madison, are now part of the business. You can see Madison on episodes of Southern Charm, which also features the store and cast members shopping there.

Fifth Season 217 Lucas Street Mount Pleasant, SC 29464

This esteemed shop sells, “a curated collection of new and vintage home accessories”. Located “On the Common” in Mt. Pleasant, it’s right next to Shem Creek. Their offerings featured on their Facebook page are replete with all kinds of housewares and amazing furnishings to make your house beautiful and to help you host with style.

More favorite shopping destinations in Mount Pleasant

We inquired on social media about other’s favorites and Anne Brumbaugh a North Carolina glass artist who formerly lived in the Lowcountry, told us about Erika Lynn Studio and Boutique.


This artist creates “gorgeous” handmade leather goods which include exotic leather handbags, sandals, and accessories. Her shop is located in the Bell Hall Shopping Center, at 608 F Long Point Rd, Mt Pleasant, SC 29464.

Author Valerie Perry  said that she loves the “fabulous” Elizabeth Stuart Design shop at 215 Coleman Boulevard, Mount Pleasant, SC 29464.


Valerie said that “especially at Christmas,” they offer amazing Christmas ornaments.

Amanda Bunting Comen said that she finds appealing the offerings from Straccio Rico at 1405 Ben Sawyer Blvd, Suite 102 in Mt Pleasant.


According to the Straccio Rico website, “Reflecting our owner’s own ethnic heritage, our title is a combination of the Italian word for “rags” and the Spanish word for “riches.” This reflects our goal to bring Wayuu artists in the La Guajira region of Colombia out of poverty. With every purchase, you create job opportunities for Colombian artisans. We are passionate about timelessly stylish items that are ethically and sustainably made by indigenous communities.”

 Trés Carmen at 320 W Coleman Blvd Suite N, Mt Pleasant, SC 29464 is, according to Sara Rich Dwyer, one of the most wonderful places to find stylish clothing. Their range is sweet, saucy and comfortable. 

Gail Bosworth mentions Out of Hand when asked where she likes to shop in the East Cooper area. According to her, this shop  “has beautiful things…clothing, decorating items for the home and cosmetics.”
